A Shaft is a vertical opening in the floor slab used for elevators, stairs, or the passage of mechanical, electrical, and plumbing (MEP) systems. In BOMA standards, these are classified as Major Vertical Penetrations and are excluded from the rentable area of every floor they pass through.
